Common Myths and Misunderstandings About Topsoil

Not all soil is the same, although it's understandable to see why that's such a big misconception about gardening and landscaping. Topsoil is the top layer of dirt and the first thing you encounter when taking a look, generally it's the first two to eight inches of surface soil. A big question that is often asked is, what exactly is topsoil made of? Read below for a better insight into the topsoil and its different varieties.

Myth #1: There's no extra work with good topsoil

A good healthy dose of topsoil will definitely be a wonderful way to help nourish your plants, but it is still crucial to maintain the quality of the soil by putting in a little bit of extra work. Over time, soil can become compacted, and adding about an inch or two of compost as you are tilling is highly recommended as this will keep your soil loose and rich with nutrients for your plants.

Myth #2: Essentially all topsoil is the same

Topsoil can drastically differ from one area to another, even when in the same yard. Sand, silt, and clay all compose topsoil in various proportions and topsoil usually contains some sort of organic or decomposed plant matter, insects, or amazing organisms such as earthworms, water, and oxygen. This is why there are so many different forms of topsoil out there.

Myth #3: My Backyard Dirt Is Great Topsoil

Your backyard soil isn't so bad that it would completely destroy your garden or landscaping but having good soil with organic matter will yield the best results in the long run. It is best to purchase at least a couple of inches of topsoil to add to your existing soil.
