Your Guide to Overseeding Your Lawn: Part One
As summer turns to fall, it is officially time to start purchasing the necessary landscaping supplies to overseed your bermudagrass. Even hybrid bermudagrass, such as Midiron, will benefit from this maintenance task. Doing so provides many advantages, such as repairing damaged areas, improving turf thickness, promoting disease resistance, and preventing weed growth. However, the most compelling reason to overseed your lawn is, of course, to ensure beautiful green grass during the Valley's warmer seasons.
Use this guide to learn more about overseeding bermudagrass.
What is Overseeding?
Overseeding is the practice of spreading cool-season grass, such as annual or perennial ryegrass, over existing bermudagrass. Midiron, Tifgreen, and Tifway are all good candidates for overseeding in the fall. This practice allows homeowners to cost-effectively enhance their lawn's appearance with minimal effort. It is ideal for filling in bare spots, thickening turf, and promoting disease and insect resistance.
However, if you are establishing a new lawn, you will want to choose new sod. Cutting Edge Curbing Sand & Rock offers several types of sod, including Midiron, which is considered one of the most durable varieties of bermudagrass. Midiron is also an ideal choice for low water use yards, specifically since it is naturally adapted to the southwest, meaning minimal water is required to ensure lush green grass.
When is the Best Time to Overseed?
In Arizona, the best time to overseed your lawn is in the fall, when daytime temperatures are in the low to mid-80s, and nighttime temperatures are in the mid-50s. These conditions are optimal for encouraging growth without the threat of frost. The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension recommends spreading cool-season grass seed in early October, such as perennial ryegrass. Any earlier than that may prevent the ryegrass from germinating, impacting a lush, green lawn.
In addition to overseeding, homeowners may want to consider integrating custom-designed, concrete landscape curbing. The permanency of this option prevents having to frequently replace more traditional edging materials that may degrade (wood) or rust (metal) over time. In addition, it is an ideal choice to make sure the seed does not blow into other landscaped areas. Cutting Edge Curbing Sand & Rock offers concrete landscaping curbing installation, often in as little as one day.
